DURHAM, N.C. — Jasmine Thomas scored 15 points and hit four clutch free throws in the closing seconds to help No. 4 Duke beat No. 12 Maryland 68-65 on Monday night for its 12th straight victory.
Joy Cheek had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Chante Black added 13 points and 14 rebounds —against a team that always seems to frustrate her — for the Blue Devils (14-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Marissa Coleman scored 14 points for Maryland (13-3, 1-1), which erased a 13-point deficit and used a 14-4 run fueled by three-pointers to take its only lead of the second half.
The Terrapins trailed 64-62 in the final minute and milked the clock, but Kristi Toliver's three-pointer with about 10 seconds left circled the rim and popped out. Thomas hit two free throws with 7.7 seconds left to put Duke up 66-62, before Toliver pulled Maryland within one by hitting a three with 2 seconds remaining.
Thomas knocked down two more foul shots with 1.7 seconds left, and Toliver couldn't get a desperation heave off before the horn.
● No. 15 Ohio State 67, Illinois 35: In Champaign, Ill., Jantel Lavender had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Star Allen added 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes to a rout.
Ashlee Trebilcock scored 11 points for Ohio State (14-2, 5-0 Big Ten).
The Buckeyes overcame a slow start and 12 turnovers to lead 27-20 at the half. Ohio State shot 36 percent from the field before the break, but held Illinois (5-13, 0-6) to just 29 percent shooting.
● No. 24 Georgia Tech 68, Miami 50: In Coral Gables, Fla., Jacqua Williams and Alex Montgomery each scored 18 points in the Yellow Jackets' win.
Iasia Hemingway added 11 for Georgia Tech (13-3, 1-1 ACC), which has won nine of its last 10 games.
Georgia Tech used a 15-0 run in the second half to take a 51-39 lead. During the run, the Yellow Jackets hit three consecutive three-pointers while holding Miami scoreless for over five minutes.
Miami (10-7, 0-3) pulled within 51-48 on a basket by Epiphany Woodson with 6:36 left, but that's the closest the Hurricanes would get.
