MORE BASEBALL
Teixeira joins Yankees
NEW YORK — Free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira joined the Yankees on Tuesday, finalizing a $180 million, eight-year deal initially agreed to Dec. 23, pending contract language and a physical.
On his first day in pinstripes, Teixeira, 28, said all the right things. He sounded at home, referring to Derek Jeter as "DJ" and saying Jeter was "one of the greatest Yankees of all-time."
New York has committed $423.5 million to three free agent additions this off-season after its streak of 13 consecutive postseason appearances ended. On Dec. 18, the Yankees completed a $161 million, seven-year contract with left-hander C.C.Sabathia and an $82.5 million, five-year deal with right-hander A.J. Burnett.
Teixeira will wear No. 25, Jason Giambi's old number. Teixeira had worn 23 with his previous teams whenever it was available to honor Don Mattingly, whose number has been retired by the Yankees.
To make room for Teixeira, New York designated Tucsonan Shelley Duncan for assignment.
● The Rockies have bolstered their starting rotation, acquiring right-hander Jason Marquis from the Cubs for reliever Luis Vizcaino.
Marquis, 30, was 11-9 with a 4.53 ERA last season for the Cubs. The Rockies also receive cash as part of the deal. Vizcaino struggled in his first year with Colorado, going 1-2 with a 5.28 ERA in 43 relief appearances.
● The Indians and free agent pitcher Carl Pavano, a four-year bust with the Yankees because of injuries, agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract on Tuesday.
● Chan Ho Park and the Phillies finalized their $2.5 million, one-year contract on Tuesday.
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
Temperatures too low for skiing
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Subzero temperatures Tuesday canceled another day of competition at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships.
Organizers waited more than an hour past the scheduled noon start before calling off a pair of distance races. Skiers won't compete unless temperatures are at least 4 degrees below zero.
Races finally began Monday after a series of cancellations over the weekend because of the frigid conditions. Organizers were not confident the temperature would remain warm enough Tuesday afternoon for the races to be complete.
