NEW YORK — Roberto Luongo came out on top in his busiest night of the season, yet the goalie duel everyone expected against Henrik Lundqvist never materialized.
Alex Burrows scored two of Vancouver's five goals against Lundqvist, and the Canucks feasted on turnovers Wednesday night in a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers.
The matchup of Vezina Trophy favorites Lundqvist and Luongo fizzled. The New York netminder was gone 5:33 into the second period. He allowed five goals on 17 shots.
"You never know in this game," said Luongo, who made a season-high 39 saves. "Things happen."
Vancouver's first four goals resulted from Rangers turnovers, and the last was scored while the Canucks were on a two-man advantage.
Kyle Wellwood scored a breakaway 4:16 in, and Burrows followed with another — while the Canucks were short-handed — to make it 2-0 at 9:38. A pass to Rangers defenseman Wade Redden bounced over his stick, creating the chance.
"The turning point in the game," said Rangers coach Tom Renney, who held a 10-minute post-game closed-door meeting. "I'm not going to suggest we were doing everything right at that point, but that was kind of the turning point, and unfortunately, it was really early."
Chris Drury scored a power-play goal, and Aaron Voros banked a shot in off of Luongo's back in the second period. Both goals trimmed the Rangers' deficit to three, but New York could do no more as its win streak ended at three.
● Capitals 6, Ducks 4: In Anaheim, Calif., Alex Ovechkin extended his goal streak to five games and added three assists to send Washington past Anaheim.
The reigning NHL MVP had a power-play goal, and Tomas Fleischmann and Mike Green scored less than two minutes apart early in the first period with the man advantage.
Nicklas Backstrom, Matt Bradley and David Steckel also scored, and Michael Nylander had two assists for the Capitals, who were 3 for 8 on the power play while winning for the sixth time in seven games.
● Bruins 7, Sabres 4: In Boston, Zdeno Chara and Chuck Kobasew each scored two goals, and Marc Savard had a goal and three assists in Boston's victory.
The Bruins won their sixth straight at home and seventh in the last eight games. Boston's last regulation loss was Oct. 30 in Calgary.
After falling behind 4-2 with 7:23 remaining in the first period, the Bruins scored five unanswered goals. Savard figured in on four of them, giving him 600 points in his career.
Savard closed the gap to 4-3 before the end of the first period, and Chara scored a pair of power-play goals sandwiched around Kobasew's second of the game as the Bruins took a 6-4 lead after two.

● Forwards Mike Fisher and Chris Neil each will be out of the slumping Ottawa Senators lineup for several weeks because of injuries. Fisher, a center, strained a ligament in his right knee during a shootout loss to the Rangers on Monday night.
Right-winger Neil tore the meniscus in his right knee on Saturday in a loss to the Islanders. He will undergo surgery and is expected to miss at least a few weeks.
