Today marks an important step in the lives of talented high school athletes everywhere.
During national signing day, seniors will pick up a pen and autograph their names to commitments to colleges, including the University of Arizona. The early signing period runs from today through next Wednesday.
Here are some fun facts about signing day and several local standouts who will secure their commitments to schools.

Sports involved in today's early period signing day: basketball, swimming, volleyball, baseball, softball, hockey, golf, gymnastics, tennis, wrestling, lacrosse, bowling and women's water polo.

• Sahuaro, swimmer, signing with Cal — a member of the El Dorado Aquatics Club and U.S. national team, she is a hopeful for the 2012 London Olympics.
Kenzie Fowler
• Canyon del Oro, pitcher, signing with UA — the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year went 24-1 with a 0.28 ERA for the Class 4A-I state-champion Dorados.
Davellyn Whyte
• St. Mary's, guard, signing with the UA — The 5-foot-10-inch Paradise Valley native played on the 5A-I state championship team as a freshman. She led the Knights in scoring, assists and steals last season.
Herbie Behm
• Catalina Foothills, swimmer, signing with Tennessee — sprinter set the all-level high school record of 19.84 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and won state titles in the 50 and 100 freestyles earlier this month.
