Arizona Wildcats volleyball coach Dave Rubio has praised his team's depth and the ability of several players who have pushed for playing time.
Freshman outside hitter Dana Hutchinson has backed up Rubio's words.
After becoming a valuable reserve, Hutchinson made her first start of the season on Sunday against Arizona State.
The Wildcats (13-9, 3-7) play No. 6 Cal tonight and No. 2 Stanford on Saturday night at McKale Center.
"Dana has a certain energy about her," Rubio said. "She has really good leadership skills and she brings some enthusiasm."
The Wildcats have lost three matches in a row — and all 3-0 — including Sunday's defeat at ASU. Cal and Stanford both swept Arizona last month.
"The last couple weeks we've been putting so much pressure on ourselves to win the matches we're supposed to win," Rubio said. "As a result, we're not playing with the same loose feeling and relaxed feeling we should be playing with."
Hutchinson has been one of Arizona's key performers recently. She finished with three kills and four digs against ASU. Here are four things to know about the 5-foot-11-inch freshman from Laguna Beach, Calif., who was the Orange County Player of the Year last year at Laguna Beach High School.
1. Sophomores Whitney Dosty and Tiffany Owens and senior Brooke Buringrud lead the team in kills, but Hutchinson is proving to be a valuable sub.
"At any time any hitter can take another hitter's place," she said about the depth. "You have to trust each other and know they'll get the job done."
2. Hutchinson's hobbies include travel, and since she was 10, surfing and snowboarding. She has vacationed in Beijing and Shanghai in China and surfed in Brazil. Her dad, Edson, is an avid surfer. "He's really good," Hutchinson said. "We don't compete. We just chill and surf."
3. Hutchinson attended Laguna Beach High School, the school that produced stars of the popular MTV shows "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills." Hutchinson said she knows most of the cast members.
"It's fun just to watch them on TV," she said. "MTV's just dumb. It makes people look stupid."
4. Besides Arizona, Hutchinson also looked at schools such as Colorado, Notre Dame and Washington. "The atmosphere, the coaches, the team is just amazing. Arizona is just a fun place to be," she said.
