Busch salvages truck from fire, qualifies third for Texas race

FORT WORTH, Texas — Kyle Busch qualified third Thursday for the NASCAR race at Texas in a truck that was salvaged two nights earlier from a hauler fire that destroyed the team's primary truck and a lot of equipment.
"With the black soot, you couldn't read the number on the side of it this morning," Busch said after his lap of 178.183 mph.
The hauler for Billy Ballew Motorsports was destroyed by fire late Tuesday night near Shreveport, La., when it was en route to Texas for tonight's Chevy Silverado 350K. Busch said the backup truck and a scarred pit box were the only things that were salvaged.
"Everything else is gone. It's unfortunate for Billy," Busch said. "I'm sure the $1 million in insurance won't cover all that was lost."
Rick Crawford, making his 22nd start at Texas, earned his first pole at the 1 1/2-mile track with a qualifying lap of 178.826 mph. It is only his fifth pole in 295 career races.
Cale Gale qualified second at 178.778 mph. Series points leader Johnny Benson qualified 20th, 13 spots behind Ron Hornaday Jr., who trails him by 31 points.
Busch, the runner-up to Hornaday at Texas in June, said the salvaged truck was full of water after firefighters put out the fire. The crew worked overnight Wednesday pumping the engine and making sure everything ran OK.
"It seems like everything is just normal with it," Busch said. "I'll put a car freshener in it, hang it from the mirror."
Alonso vague on details for '09
SAO PAULO, Brazil — Two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso says he's thrilled with his ride for 2009, although he won't reveal any contract details until after this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix.
"(I'm) very happy," the Renault driver said Thursday, adding an announcement will be made next week.
Whether Alonso stays at Renault or moves to another team has been one of the most anticipated decisions of the year.
"With Alonso's indecision, other teams tend to wait, too," said teammate Nelson Piquet Jr.
Piquet might lose his ride if Alonso stays at Renault. If the Spaniard moves to Honda, for example, then it's Rubens Barrichello who might have to find another ride.
Alonso enters the year-ending Brazilian GP sixth in the standings with 53 points, 41 behind leader Lewis Hamilton.
Alonso won both his F1 titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006 before moving to McLaren last year. But after being at odds with rookie teammate Hamilton and team principal Ron Dennis, Alonso moved back to Renault for this season.
He struggled in his return, winning only nine points in his first seven races. But Alonso and Renault improved considerably in the last half of the season, with two wins and top-four finishes in six of the last seven races.
Racists target Hamilton
SAO PAULO, Brazil — Formula One title favorite Lewis Hamilton has been the target of racist messages at a Web site aimed at promoting his failure in the decisive Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Www.pinchalaruedadehamilton.com (or Burst Hamilton's Tires) asks visitors to place images of pins, nails and porcupines on the Interlagos track to try to keep F1's first black driver from finishing Sunday's race.
Visitors are invited to "leave a message to Hamilton," and many of them are full of racism and obscenities.
The Web site says, in Spanish, that "Hamilton cannot finish the race" and that "We want Hamilton to lose."
Formula One's governing body condemned the Web site, according to Brazilian media, saying that it is against any act of "discrimination and prejudice."
Hamilton enters the final race of the year with a chance to win his first title and become F1's youngest champion at 23. He has a seven-point advantage over Ferrari's Felipe Massa, and can win the championship by finishing fifth or better on Sunday.
