Catalina Foothills and Cienega opened the 4A girls regional at Torres Blancas Golf Club in Green Valley on Thursday in dominating fashion, and the Falcons and Bobcats quickly showed why they are the teams to beat.
Foothills put together a 318 team score in the Sonoran Region. The significance: The Falcons will have a 130-shot lead over Marana heading into Day 2.
Sophomore Laura Jabczenski set a blazing pace for the Falcons when she carded a 1-over-par 73.
"It's a shorter course and I'm a longer hitter," Jabczenski said. "So every hole where I could take out my driver and just grip-it-and-rip-it, I felt pretty good."
Teammates Brittany McKee and Erin McClure also fared well. McKee had a 77; McClure shot a 79. All five Falcons scored in the top 15 on the leader board.
Other team scores in the Sonoran: Marana, 448; Canyon del Oro, 501; Cholla, 538; and Pueblo, 576.
In the Kino Region, Cienega's Sun Park struggled early, then rallied for a 76, which was second only to Jabczenski among the three regions in the two-day tournament.
Park had trouble on the second hole. She thought she had cleared a group of trees down the left side of the fairway, which would have put her next to the green. But she was unable to find her ball and took a drop. The senior eventually tapped in for one of her three double bogeys on the front nine.
"It was disappointing that I couldn't find my ball, because I hit it really well," Park said. "I had a good day today, though. There were just a couple of unfortunate events, like what happened on No. 2."
Park rallied on the back nine by going birdie-par-eagle-par on Nos. 15-18.
Cienega's team score was 329, which was enough to hold off a Sabino charge led by Brittany Rooyakkers' score of 84. The Sabercats finished with a 357. Other Kino scores: Sahuaro, 464; and Flowing Wells, 600. Desert View did not have enough golfers for a team score.
St. Gregory leads the Gila Region after its first-round 403. Santa Rita's Amanda Kim had the best score in the region with an 85. Other Gila team scores: Santa Rita, 455; Amphitheater, 576; Palo Verde, 592; and Catalina, 648.
