ANAHEIM, Calif. — Quite a lively bunch, the youth-infused Phoenix Coyotes.
Rookies Kyle Turris and Mikkel Boedker both scored for the first time in the NHL, and college hockey's outstanding player of 2007-08, Kevin Porter, chipped in with an assist Sunday night to help the Coyotes spoil the Ducks' home opener with a 4-2 victory.
Two games and two wins into the season, Wayne Gretzky's enjoying coaching the young players.
"They're a special group. The veteran players around them have brought them along nicely," Gretzky said. "They play hard and they want to get better and it's fun to be around them.
"These kids are pretty unique and they are pretty good. I think although they're kids, they're pretty mature. They really have their eyes wide-open and are having a lot of fun."
Turris was taken by Phoenix with the third pick in the 2007 draft, and Boedker was selected eighth this year. Porter was taken in the fourth round in 2004, before his outstanding college career at Michigan.
The Coyotes' Ilya Bryzgalov, formerly Jean-Sebastien Giguere's backup in Anaheim, made 33 saves to run his record against the Ducks to 4-1-1, and Shane Doan scored twice for Phoenix.
Ryan Carter and George Parros scored for the Ducks (0-2).
Doan's second goal gave Phoenix a 4-2 lead with 3:40 remaining, and Parros capped the scoring just 13 seconds later.
Scattered skirmishes broke out on the ice in the final second of the game, when the Ducks drew five penalties and the Coyotes three.
"It was just tempers flaring," Gretzky said.
The Coyotes built a 3-0 lead in the second period before Carter scored for Anaheim.
Giguere stopped 20 shots, but was victimized for two goals by shoddy defensive play.
Boedker was happy with his first NHL goal.
"So far there have only been two games, but every one is special, and obviously getting my goal in my second game, that's unbelievable," he said.
He, like Gretzky, credited the Coyotes' veterans for taking the younger players under their wings.
"The leadership, it's huge for us. It's just feeding off them," Boedker said.
The Ducks, beaten 4-1 at San Jose in their season opener, looked sluggish again.
"We're just not where we need to be with our focus," Scott Niedermayer said. "We're working, but we're not working smart and we're in the wrong place at the wrong time."
● Oilers 3, Avalanche 2: In Edmonton, Alberta, Dustin Penner scored his second goal of the game with 5.4 seconds left and Edmonton won its season opener.
Penner, who also scored the Oilers' second goal earlier in the third period, tipped Ethan Moreau's shot past goalie Peter Budaj in the final seconds. Shawn Horcoff also scored for Edmonton.
Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk had goals for Colorado (0-2).
● Sharks 1, Kings 0: In Los Angeles, Lukas Kaspar scored his first NHL goal and Brian Boucher made 21 saves to lead San Jose past the Kings.
Kaspar whisked a wrist shot from the right circle past goalie Jason LaBarbera midway through the second period to help the Sharks sweep the teams' home-and-home series and improve to 3-0 this season.
