Cats hope Gaddy can help bring in a friendCalifornia center serious about degree, dad says

The Abdul Gaddy effect will get an immediate test this weekend, when Arizona basketball recruiting target Anthony Stover visits the Wildcats.
Stover, a 6-foot-9-inch, 210-pound center, is one of the UA's top remaining recruiting targets in the class of 2009, after the Wildcats received a commitment Monday from Gaddy.
"He and Anthony are friends, and they have talked" about Arizona, said Craig Stover, Anthony's father. "But we kind of do things a little differently here. We evaluate and make sure what's best educationally and in playing time. We have our own Stover war room."
Craig Stover said getting a degree is a top priority for Anthony, who is interested in economics, business and finance. So far, the Stovers have centered their thinking — and their visits — on ASU, Creighton, Arizona and UCLA. Cal is also possible, Craig Stover said, although Stanford and Oregon State have been eliminated.
Anthony Stover, who plays at Renaissance Academy in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., has already participated in two UA advanced-skills camps, including one last month, but will take a more detailed look at the program during this weekend's official visit. He will then visit UCLA next weekend.
UA coach Lute Olson made an in-home visit to Stover last week, which Craig Stover said went well. But the two sides briefly touched on Stover's potential role with the Wildcats.
"That's the main reason we're coming down for the visit," Craig Stover said. "We talked generally about it. Now we want to talk scheme and all that stuff. We're looking forward to it."
There is little doubt the Wildcats could use Stover, ranked No. 70 nationally by Scout.com: They are expected to lose Fendi Onobun (senior) and Jordan Hill (early departure) next spring and have no true post players so far in their 2009 class.
Hornbuckle closer
Southern California wing Keegan Hornbuckle said he plans to make a decision within two weeks or so after visiting Arizona on Sunday and Monday.
Hornbuckle, an unrated 6-6 prospect in the class of 2009, said he is still considering Colorado, Michigan, Nevada, Loyola Marymount, Penn and Arizona.
"They're still one of the top schools on my list," Hornbuckle said Wednesday. "I'm still pretty open right now."
Rim shots
● Scout.com analyst Greg Hicks said on-campus recruiting showcases such as the Arizona Cactus Classic probably will be banned in the future, with the NCAA now investigating an Olson-signed letter asking for financial support of the event, which is not allowed to be affiliated with UA. "It's not a minor thing," Hicks said of the NCAA investigation. "You're not talking about trying to influence one recruit but tons of them. It's a big, big advantage."
● Onobun worked his way into Tucson City Court records in unusual fashion when he faced a charge of (drum roll, please) … improper tinting. But he submitted proof that he fixed the issue last Friday and his sentence was suspended, city prosecutor Laura Brynwood said.
● Two of UA's recruiting targets this spring made decisions Wednesday: Guard Avery Bradley, who used to play high school and summer ball with Gaddy, chose Texas, and Sylmar, Calif., wing Tyler Honeycutt chose UCLA.
