A college football game is about to begin. That can only mean one thing — someone somewhere is tailgating.

Thousands of football fans arrive hours before kickoff to grill their favorite meats, crack open a few cold ones and blare their car stereos during the sacred ritual.

Here's a glimpse at the top spots to partake in tailgating for Arizona Wildcats games:

1. The UA Mall is the place to tailgate for both small and big parties. But good luck obtaining a spot if you don't already have one. Season passes are sold out, and there's a long waiting list. Single-game permits may become available on a game-by-game basis for $55 or $70, depending on space size. Why is tailgating on the Mall such a blast? "In September in Tucson, it's nice to be on the grass instead of a parking lot," said Chaz Elsten, founding member of the tailgating group The Red Army. "It's sponsored by the UA, so there are bathrooms and trash cans. You get your own space near the stadium."

2. Gittings Lawn at the corner of Campbell Avenue and University Boulevard is another hot spot for alumni and groups. Permits for this grassy knoll are also sold out but might become available on a game-by-game basis.

3. The university offers two parking lots available for tailgating — one that permits alcohol and one that does not. Lot 4052, near Speedway Boulevard and Cherry Avenue, allows alcohol. Permits are $70 per season for cars and $175 for RVs. Call the McKale Ticket Office at 621-CATS for more information. Game-day passes might also be available for $5 or $10.

4. For those who don't need booze for their tailgating fun, Lot 5078, adjacent to the Sixth Street Garage, is also available, though alcohol is prohibited. Cost is the same as for Lot 4052.

5. Or, take your chances on an undesignated spot off campus. The University Medical Center parking lot, Belushe's on Sixth Street, the Circle K across from the stadium and nearby neighborhoods are possibilities.
