SEEN AND HEARD AT THE OLYMPIC TRACK & FIELD TRIALS

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 07.06.2008
EUGENE, Ore. — While former UA standout thrower Doug Reynolds competed in the discus preliminaries on Thursday, he was also in the dual role of coach.
Reynolds, 33, is the throws coach at the University of Kentucky. And, two of his athletes were in his flight on Thursday.
"They both would like to beat the old man," the Phoenix native said after he advanced to today's final. "They haven't done it yet. But I'm giving them cues out there, just not as aggressively as usual."
Kentucky's Rashaud Scott threw 197 feet 2 inches to qualify for the finals. Teammate Chase Madison tossed 183-09 and did not advance.
It is because of those guys that Reynolds, an alternate on the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, is even competing. "I started to throw on a dare from the kids," he said. "I thought I should give it a go."
He advanced to today's final round (198-03) at 2:20 p.m.

Not just nachos

• Taking advantage of the local flavor in the Pacific Northwest, the Eugene '08 organizing committee turned to its berries.
Huckleberry cobbler, strawberry shortcake and yogurt with blueberries, blackberries and marionberries are among the fare served here.
We may have sampled the berry goodness. All of it.

Tip if you please

• The only modes of transportation allowed within a quarter-mile of Hayward Field are foot-related: walking and bicycling.
So many cyclists are using bikes that Eugene '08 set up valet bike parking outside the track. You drop it off and then fetch it at the end of the night. No need for a lock. The area has security.

She said it

"I'm a lady. I love the skirt. I think it adds a little something."
Hammer thrower Loree Smith, a Colorado native who prefers to wear dresses or skirts while competing. She placed fourth on Saturday.

By the numbers

0 - Number of relays run at the trials. Team members for Beijing are determined by how sprinters fare in the trials.
3 -Colors of Scottsdale javelin thrower Breaux Greer's fauxhawk: hot pink, black and white.
46 -Age of Roald Bradstock, one of the oldest competitors at the trials. He did not make finals in the men's javelin.

Strong abs, tough Abdi

• After a hip injury sidelined Tucson distance runner Abdi Abdirahman last November, it was time for some core work.
Coach Dave Murray, sent Abdirahman to the weight room. Arizona Wildcats' strength coach, Corey Edmonds, put Abdirahman on an "extensive" core program.
"He needed to do the little extras," Murray said. "This was the first time he's been very motivated. He was working three days a week."
Abdirahman ran tall on Friday night, winning the 10,000 meters and making the Olympic team.
