CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Top-seeded Miami beat the Arizona Wildcats 14-10 Saturday night to force a third and final game of the NCAA super regional series at Mark Light Field.
Its bullpen taxed during Friday's Game 1, four Arizona pitchers issued 16 walks, setting a school record, and allowed four home runs. Miami No. 6 hitter Dennis Raben drew six walks, setting school record and super-regional records and tying an NCAA record.
The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the College World Series.
The Wildcats entered the game unlikely to use any of their three best relievers. Left-handed reliever Daniel Schlereth was unavailable because of a strained oblique. He also did not pitch Friday. Ryan Perry threw 70 pitches Friday and closer Jason Stoffel threw 30 in Arizona's 6-3 victory in 11 innings Friday in Game 1.
Starting left-hander David Coulon lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs, six hits and five walks while striking out four. Mike Colla gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings. Seldom-used Grayson Adams walked three and allowed a run in the seventh.
Arizona took a 4-0 lead in the first on an error and four hits, including C.J. Ziegler's 20th home run, a two-run shot.
But Miami rallied with a run in the third and six runs in the fourth, sending 12 batters to the plate to take a 7-4 lead. Yonder Alonso delivered the biggest blow – a three-run home run off Coulon that hit the top of the right-field wall – his 22nd drive of the season. Jason Hagerty also hit a two-run, line-drive home run off Coulon in the inning, and Jemile Weeks drove in a run on a single.
The Wildcats rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and two walks to tie the game at 7-7.
To snap the tie, Miami tallied four runs in the sixth – all on two home runs. Mark Sobolewski led off with a home run off Mike Colla and Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run home run after a pair of walks.
Arizona cut the lead to 12-10 with two runs in the seventh – on Jon Gaston's 13th home run and second of the super regional – and a run in the eighth. But Miami answered with two more runs in the ninth.
