Rockies 'like to believe' they'll stay in TucsonROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS

The Rockies have taken steps to try and ensure they continue to hold spring training at Hi Corbett Field, where they have been based since their inception in 1993.
Questions about the Rockies' status have been broached because of plans the White Sox have to move from Tucson to Glendale, where they will share a facility with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"We would like to believe our needs can be addressed," Rockies president Keli McGregor said of talks with Tucson officials about improvements the Rockies would like at Hi Corbett Field. "With four years left (on the lease) we normally would not be addressing certain concerns, but the White Sox have accelerated our conversations" with Tucson officials.
The Rockies lease allows them to opt out if there are not three teams in Tucson. McGregor said Wednesday he felt it can be a workable situation if the Rockies and Arizona are left in Tucson, although the two teams would need concessions, including a priority among Arizona-based teams in scheduling spring games because of the logistics of traveling from the Phoenix area to Tucson.
"Two teams is not ideal," he said. "I'd like to think we would have three teams with an eventual expansion to four or five."
Cincinnati is in discussions with Goodyear about moving from Sarasota, Fla., to that Phoenix-area city, where it would share a facility with Cleveland. There are questions about the ability of Maricopa County to finance another new facility. That could lead to the Reds considering replacing the White Sox at Tucson Electric Park.
The White Sox face steep financial penalties if they move before the expiration of their lease in 2012, but their facility in Glendale is going to be ready for occupancy by next spring.
Diamondbacks still intrigued by Nixon
If the Arizona Diamondbacks reach an agreement with Trot Nixon, it would happen in the next day or so, general manager Josh Byrnes said Wednesday morning.
Nixon worked out for the D-backs on Sunday and could provide the club another left-handed bat as first baseman Chad Tracy recovers from knee surgery and catcher Miguel Montero has a broken finger.
"It's complicated in the sense that there are a number of scenarios that can play out if he were to sign with us, so we're just trying to contractually deal with them," Byrnes said.
One possibility is that Nixon, 33, sign an advance consent to accept a minor-league assignment up to 45 days after the major-league season begins.
Team meeting today, then workout
The Diamondbacks will hold a team meeting today before their first full squad workout.
"It's more about keeping our edge and working harder and getting better and being proud of the fact we accomplished a lot last year," Melvin said, "but the slate is wiped clean, and we start from scratch."
Inside pitch
● White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd has made a strong impression this spring after pitching well in the final five weeks of 2007.
"It's nice to see some of the guys who have worked on some of the things we sent them home to work on," general manager Ken Williams said Wednesday.
Floyd, 25, posted a 3.41 ERA in his last five starts in 2007 after getting promoted July 24 from Triple-A Charlotte.
● Diamondbacks second baseman Orlando Hudson has not appeared restricted this spring after undergoing September surgery for a torn ligament in his left hand.
"We'll get a read before the games start on where the soreness will be, if indeed he has any," Melvin said. "He's a guy who doesn't need to get 100 at-bats in spring training."
● The D-backs are unsure when reliever Tony Peña will arrive at camp after experiencing visa issues. He is throwing at an academy in the Dominican Republic.
● Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune contributed to this report.
