Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.19.2008
Archery, horseshoes and softball will highlight more than 100 events for more than 2,000 senior athletes at the Tucson Senior Olympic Festival.
Golf competition kicked off the event Friday. Events continue through Jan. 27 with competitive and noncompetitive events held around the Tucson area.
At 10 a.m. today, the festival gets into full swing at Reid Park DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center with the Senior Expo, followed by Opening Ceremonies, including a torch lighting at 11 a.m.
Complete schedules can be found online at www.tucson seniorgames.org.
The Star talked to coordinator Mike Davis for the rundown:
Q. What do athletes gain from the festival?
A. "Besides the spirit of competition, the athletes like the social aspect of the whole thing. They get to train and compete with their friends. It also allows them to be recognized for what they can accomplish.
Athletes receive medals for first, second and third, with some participation medals in our noncompetitive events like leisure walking."
Q. Can you tell us about some of the events?
A. "There are traditional events like badminton, track and field and baseball. There are also card games, like bridge and euchre. I would say that pickleball is pretty popular, but volleyball is probably our biggest team sport. As far as individual events, track and field is the biggest."
Q. What can spectators look forward to seeing?
A. "From my own experience, I know that you get some shock and awe you wouldn't expect. I got to see a 92-year-old man power lift last year. It was amazing, because I don't even know if I could do that. He was out-lifting guys that were 60 years old — that's a 30-year difference. You don't expect them to be able to do that. The athletes do some amazing things.
