UA cornerback Cason to find out today if he's the winner of Thorpe Awardstaff and wire reports
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 12.06.2007
Antoine Cason will find out tonight if he's the winner of the Thorpe Award.
The UA senior cornerback — and coach Mike Stoops — will be in New York City tonight for ESPN's College Football Awards show. Cason is a finalist for the Thorpe, given annually to the nation's top defensive back. Boston College's James Silva and LSU's Craig Steltz are the others.
Cason finished tied for the UA team lead with five interceptions in 2007, including two that went for touchdowns. Cason would be the second Wildcat to take the Thorpe Award. Cornerback Darryll Lewis took home the award in 1990. Cason was a semifinalist for the award a year ago.

Rule could end golf event
EL PASO — The Western Refining All-America Golf Classic, an annual fall college tournament that gives All-American golfers a chance to showcase their skills could have seen its last days.
An NCAA rule change may make the most recent showcase in November the last. The NCAA eliminated the board responsible for deciding what college sporting events would be exempt from a rule that limits the number of playing days for student-athletes. The El Paso tournament had previously been an exempt event for golfers.
"It's the only individual event there is and it's a chance for these kids to have a reward for being an All-American," UA coach Rick LaRose said.
● Arizona volleyball players Katie Jackels, Dominique Lamb and Randy Goodenough received Pac-10 all-academic honorable-mention honors.
● The 2007 Junior 4-Wall Nationals will take place at Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club on Dec. 27-30. Junior players from at least four countries will compete in various age divisions.

● The Pima College women's basketball team lost 67-64 at home to Mesa on Wednesday night. The Pima men lost to Mesa 102-85 at home.
