Teammates inspire Flowing Wells senior in return from injuryArizona Daily Star

Flowing Wells senior Abyee Maracigan never backs away from a challenge.
After tearing her meniscus three games into her junior season, and tearing her ACL twice the year before, Maracigan is once again a fixture in the Caballeros (7-1) starting lineup.
"I just hated watching my team play without me, so I worked as hard as I could," she said.
Maracigan, a guard who has committed to play at Pima College next year, also balances basketball with four classes, including her favorite subject, math.
The aspiring teacher, or "maybe a pharmacist," also works at an ice cream shop every day after school.
The Star talked with Maracigan about her senior season following Flowing Wells' 77-21 victory over Rio Rico on Thursday:
Q: How do you feel about the season?
A: I am very confident because we're playing exactly like we want. We're having a lot of fun but playing for our goals. We want to win every tournament, win the (4A Kino Region) by going undefeated and, of course, we want to win state. We only have one loss right now. We want to keep it that way.
Q: You're one of the leading scorers on the team (15 points per game). How do you feel about that role?
A: It's fun to be a leading scorer, but I know it's all due to my teammates. Everyone on our team is a team player. They give me the ball because they believe in me. I think I play well because of them.
Q: After the injuries, did you expect to play as you are now?
A: I always have high expectations for myself. I never want to let myself down, but sometimes I did have my doubts because I had to wear knee braces, do therapy and that stuff. But my teammates really encouraged me when I was down. They got on me to work out. And I knew what I needed to do to finish my senior year with no regrets."
Q: Does your team have any traditions?
A: We go out to eat a lot. We're a big eating team. We also like to watch other basketball teams play. We go to movies, have team barbecues — because we love to eat."
Q: Are you and your teammates friends off the court?
A: We're very close. A lot of us have been playing together since junior high. The rest of us started playing together in the beginning of high school. I think we're just really close because we have the same goals, the same mind-set. It makes it that much better for us. We're winning and having a good time together."
Q: What is the message Flowing Wells wants to send this year?
A: You can't break us. We come in as one big group, but if one of us falls, we're all right there. We can't be broken.
