Bowl hopes, bowl hypes ride on this week's rivalry gamesArizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.28.2007
USC and UCLA play for the 295-pound Victory Bell, a remnant of a Southern Pacific freight locomotive.
This year's stake has a better ring to it — the Rose Bowl.
Win and the Trojans are guaranteed a trip to Pasadena on New Year's Day. More improbably, if the Bruins win and Arizona State falls to the UA, then UCLA will play in the Rose Bowl.
"This is enormous for us," USC coach Pete Carroll said.
Every Pac-10 rivalry game this weekend has postseason implications. Even Washington's rare matchup with Hawaii is linked to the Warriors' Bowl Championship Series hopes.
Here is what's at stake:
1. UCLA at USC
USC leads series 41-29-7.
At stake: The Rose Bowl.
Fast fact: UCLA won last year to snap USC's seven-game winning streak; that run started when the Trojans broke UCLA's eight-year winning streak.
Storyline: Carroll said USC is hunted by every opposing team, but playing UCLA is special.
"It might not be as national as it is local," he said. "It's a huge game around here."
2. The Duel in the Desert
Arizona leads series 44-35-1.
At stake: Bowl eligibility for the UA; for ASU, a Rose Bowl berth — if USC loses.
Fast fact: ASU can become the first team to win three straight since 1995.
Storyline: If playing ASU is not enough incentive, the UA's bowl hopes hinge on this game — again.
"They're both significant in the fact we're trying to get over the hump," UA coach Mike Stoops said. "We've been knocking on the door here for a couple years and haven't quite done what we wanted to do as a team."
3. The Civil War
Ducks lead series 55-45-10.
At stake: Likely the Sun Bowl. The Ducks, Beavers and Bruins are tied with 5-3 Pac-10 records. Oregon and Oregon State would lose any tiebreaker for first place.
Fast fact: The 110 meetings are the most on the West Coast.
Storyline: After losing three quarterbacks to injury, Oregon will start freshman Cody Kempt on Saturday. Freshman Justin Roper will be the backup; the emergency plan includes a running back and safety.
"Somebody's going to show up and make some plays who nobody thought would," UO coach Mike Bellotti said.
4. The Big Game
Stanford leads series 54-44-11.
At stake: Golden Bears can fortify their bowl chances.
Fast fact: Begun in 1892, the game is the West Coast's oldest.
Storyline: The Cardinal is playing for pride; Cal tries to snap a skid that has seen it lose five of six.
"This is the kind of game that can really make your season — playing for the team, for the seniors that are gonna be going into that locker room after the game and hanging their jersey on that nail for the last time," Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh said.
5. Washington vs. Hawaii
Series tied at 1.
At stake: A BCS berth for the Warriors. The only undefeated team in Division I-A is No. 12 in the BCS standings and could receive a BCS berth Sunday.
Fast fact: The Huskies last played in Hawaii in the 1938 Pineapple Bowl.
Storyline: The Warriors are playing perhaps the biggest game in school history.
"As a football team, we know this game means a great deal to them," UW coach Tyrone Willingham said.
