UA coach Mike Stoops can do more than just boost his career and salvage a rough season with an upset of No. 2 Oregon on Thursday night.
He can help his brother.
Bob Stoops' Oklahoma team is ranked fourth in the Bowl Championship Series ratings; the Sooners would surely move up with an Oregon loss.
Not that Mike Stoops is looking that far.
"Shoot, I'm just trying to help myself," Stoops said Tuesday.
Oregon's Mike Bellotti said Monday that Mike and Bob Stoops pool their resources every time one of their teams plays Oregon. "I think every time we played them, we felt it was probably the case, whether it was against Oklahoma or Arizona," Bellotti said.
The Wright one
Speedy freshman William "Bug" Wright has mimicked Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon as the scout-team quarterback in practices.
The 5-foot-9-inch, 170-pound Wright played under center as a high school star in tiny Pauls Valley, Okla.
Wright, who is redshirting, has watched plenty of film of Dixon in the past week, in part to get the quarterback's idiosyncrasies down; he has been most impressed by the speed the Ducks star possesses.
"That's what I've mostly been doing, working on quickness, making (the defense) break down so they're ready to tackle me."
Veteran Cat thankful
Monday's Veteran's Day hit home for Edwin Lopez. The Wildcats' walk-on linebacker spent seven years as a staff sergeant in the Air Force before enrolling at the UA this fall.
Lopez, 26, said his time in the military — which included a stint in Qatar and 120 days in Iraq — was "pretty intense."
"There's no games over there. Teamwork was definitely crucial," the Valdosta, Ga., native said.
"I tell these guys all the time: Teamwork is big. When you're at war, it's life or death … if you don't work together, you'll get killed."
Lopez enlisted in the Air Force after spending his freshman year at the University of Maryland.
