In the first round of the Class 4A-I state tournament, 18 kills from Stephanie Ziegler helped sixth-seeded Canyon del Oro sweep No. 11 Catalina Foothills 25-21, 27-25, 25-17.
"It's really hard to beat a team four times, and that was the fourth time we played Catalina Foothills," CDO coach Melva Lundy said. "I commend Foothills for giving us everything they had."
A Ziegler hit helped the Dorados come back from a three-point deficit to take a 26-25 lead in Game 2. The Falcons gave away game point with an attack error.
"It happens. I don't think we did the small things well tonight," Foothills coach A.J. Malis said. "When we got out of system and we had a second ball, there were too many situations where we didn't play that second ball very well."
After Meghan Menke and Ziegler notched consecutive kills for a 4-3 lead, Game 3 was all CDO. Kelly Engle ended the match with her ninth kill.

● Sabino 3, Peoria 1 (25-15, 25-22, 16-25, 26-24): At Sabino, the Sabercats advanced to the quarterfinals but not before Peoria nearly forced a fifth game.
"We got up early, so we knew they were going to come out relaxed in the third game," said Sabino coach John Kramkowski. "They played aggressively and did some more things offensively that they weren't able to do in the first two games," he said.
The No. 3 Sabercats used solid passing and stout defense. Peoria forced Sabino to play a finesse style on defense.
Sabino led early in Game 3, but an efficient Peoria defense sparked the No. 14 Panthers' comeback for a 25-16 victory.
Sabino's Jessica Rimsza served out Game 4 for the win.

● Sahuarita 3, Rio Rico 1 (20-25, 25-11, 25-14, 25-7): At Sahuarita, every time outside hitter Jennica Tessendorf went up for an attack, the words "uh-oh" came pouring from the crowd.
More often than not, the following play was a violent Tessendorf hit that resulted in a point for the Mustangs.
Tessendorf recorded a career-high 35 kills.
"Just recently I was told that I look like a beast out there," Tessendorf said. "So yes, I guess I am a beast."
Despite losing a first game filled with errors, Sahuarita won the next three with Tessendorf leading the way.
"The first game we failed to execute our game plan for the day," Sahuarita coach Dan Komperda said. "By the second game we finally got into what we were trying to do."
