When Rincon/University senior Bobby Koubratoff finished the 200-yard freestyle Saturday at the 5A-II Southern Region championships, he looked around, trying to figure out if he had won.
Then he realized no one else had finished yet. Koubratoff touched the wall in 1 minute 45.53 seconds, more than four seconds before Kyle Adams of Ironwood Ridge (1:49.71.)
"I'm glad that things worked out that way," said Koubratoff, who also won the 500 free by more than 20 seconds. "I swam pretty well for regionals, which I'm happy about, but there is a lot of improvement that can be made before state."
Individual titles from junior Jeff Amlee in the 50 and 100 free also helped Rincon claim the team championship with a score of 591. Ironwood Ridge (470) was second, followed by Mountain View (420) and Sunnyside (130).
"I have a lot that I can improve on (in the 100 free) but I felt good," Amlee said. "I think I'll be able to do a lot better next week at state."
Freshman Mallory Brown helped the Rincon girls earn the team championship with 610 points. She won individual titles in the 50 free (26.20) and 100 free (57.95).
"I was surprised with my time in the 100 because I really didn't feel like I was going 57. It's my best time, so that's exciting," Brown said.
Ironwood Ridge placed second with 533. Juniors Chloe Buser and Rachel Svetlik both added two individual titles to wins in the 200 and 400 medley relays.
Salpointe Catholic dominated the boys 5A-I Southern Region competition with 579 points.
Sierra Vista Buena placed second with 423. Tucson's Joe Fisher, Cody Ridge, Nick Derstine and Sam Oshell helped the Badgers outscore fourth-place Casa Grande by opening with a win in the 200 medley relay.
"Our medley relay was really surprising but, I was happy that we got to set the record straight — we can race," said Fisher, who also won the 200 IM.
Salpointe's Miranda Lyle won the 50 free (26.06) and 100 fly (1:05.92). The freshman also anchored the 200 free relay after helping the Lancers win the 200 medley relay.
"I didn't think that I would be finishing first as a freshman. I was just hoping that my times would be good," she said.
Salpointe won the girls competition with 612. Buena (513) was second, followed by Tucson (335) and Casa Grande (230).
