When the Salpointe Catholic girls volleyball team found itself in trouble Tuesday night, it looked to senior outside hitter Kimi Reid.
"It's my job to put the ball away," Reid said. It was her match-high 18 kills that helped Salpointe edge 5A Southern Region I rival Tucson 25-17, 25-17, 21-25 and 25-18 to remain undefeated in conference play.
"We had a lot of energy tonight that was pretty much the key," Salpointe coach Amy Johnson said. "I think we did a good job of fighting for every point."
Reid helped the Lancers (24-11) break a tie at 15 in Game 1 with a kill.
"I really couldn't do anything out there without the rest of my team," she said.
But mistakes from Tucson (19-12), including a serving error, an attack error and a net violation in the last moments of the game also helped the Lancers take the first game after 11 ties.
Salpointe went on a 7-0 run behind five Tucson mistakes to start Game 2.
"They're pretty darn good, but we make a lot of errors because we don't really have the experience of playing at this level yet," Tucson coach Matt Dyck said. "We're getting better every day, and that's what is important for us."
With the third game tied at 21, Tucson's Alexis Ammerman tipped the ball over Salpointe's middle blockers to secure the game.
"I told them after the second game that they need to just get the little things done," Johnson said. "I told the girls that they need to pass the balls a little bit better. I told them just to execute better."
After a Tucson hitting error broke a 9-9 tie, Reid helped her team take an 11-9 lead in fourth with two kills. The Lancers never looked back.
"I actually think this match was a good thing. I'm hoping that we can build on our season from here," Dyck said.
Badger Nalani Barnes led the team with 12 kills.
"That is so much better than I did against them in the last game," Barnes said. "I think that's really good but I want to get better from here."
