Wildcats win twice at HillenbrandArizona Daily Star

Hillenbrand Stadium had a local feel Sunday afternoon.
In a battle between Tucson schools, the Arizona softball team (5-0) took five innings to top Pima College 14-0 in the UA's second game of the day.
"We're a good junior college team right now but we need to be a good Division I team. The competition is going to get a lot stiffer," UA coach Mike Candrea said. "It's a long process and I think this part of the process right now, we look very well and I'm very pleased."
Freshman Lindsey Sisk pitched three hitless innings before giving up a single to Alyssa Rosales. The Cats combined for 12 hits, three off ex-Cat Samantha Hoffman, and five home runs.
K'Lee Arredondo had two home runs in Game 2.
"We played the best team on the planet next to the Olympic team. They're a lot better in person than they are on TV," Pima coach Armando Quiroz said. "But we played well in this tournament, throwing this game out."
Senior catcher Callista Balko ended the first game in the sixth inning with a solo home run, putting the Cats up 8-0 against Cypress. Arredondo and Jenae Leles also hit homers in Game 1.
Taryne Mowatt gave up two hits in Game 1 before Sisk pitched a one-hit sixth.
Arizona will practice for two more weeks this fall before picking up in the spring. The alumni game scheduled for the end of October was canceled because of scheduling conflicts with alumni players.
Mowatt, Sisk similar in the circle
Balko noticed similarities between senior Mowatt and newcomer Sisk.
"Mentally, both of them are pretty much at the same spot right now," said Balko, who has caught both pitchers.
"I know Taryne just came off the high of the World Series so she's doing really well," Balko said. "Lindsey, as a freshman, just has such a strong head for her age. You would never know if she just had a home run hit off her or if she struck someone out. She's got that good game face."
Arredondo, Balko lead in homers
Arredondo and Balko are the UA's home run leaders. After tying Sarah Akamine for the lead Saturday, Balko had two Sunday to give her four homers since Oct. 6. Arredondo had three homers Sunday.
Pima powered by natives
Seventeen of the 21 Aztecs hail from Southern Arizona high schools. The fall tournament also featured four locals playing for both UA and Central Arizona.
Quiroz thinks the local mix will help the Aztecs bond.
"It's been fun to watch them come together after having friendly rivalries in high school and travel ball," he said.
