Coach David Rubio said the biggest enemy for the Arizona volleyball team is Arizona.
Junior Randy Goodenough agreed.
"We completely beat ourselves," Goodenough said after Friday night's 3-0 loss to No. 21 Oregon.
After losing to the Ducks 30-21 in the first game at McKale Center, the Wildcats squandered leads in the second and third games to fall 31-29 in both.
"I really didn't think we were capable of playing that poorly," Rubio said.
Arizona gave the Ducks 27 points on attack errors, seven on service errors and three on block errors in the match.
After Arizona started the first game with an attack out of bounds from Goodenough, who led the match with 12 attack errors, the Wildcats fell behind 8-0 before three consecutive Oregon hitting errors made it an 8-3 game. The Ducks then built their lead to 15-3 with seven consecutive points that the Wildcats could not answer.
"We're up in Games 2 and 3, and in a position to win those games, but people didn't step up and do the things we needed them to do in order to make that happen," Rubio said.
The Wildcats looked to take Game 2 after building a 23-13 lead. But after a Marija Milosevic kill allowed Oregon to tie the game at 24, the teams tied five more times before the Ducks pulled out the victory with a kill and a block.
"I think, when we're up by so much, it's really disappointing to see us not finish a game," Goodenough said. "We worked that hard to get a lead, and we just didn't hold it. We didn't stay playing our game. We just kind of became relaxed."
With the third game tied for the 15th time at 29, Oregon sealed the match with a kill and an ace.
"Teams like ours are trying to climb that mountain, but we need to overcome our doubts and have self-confidence," Rubio said.
Arizona heads to Washington State on Thursday and Washington on Friday.
"Eventually, we'll get this turned around," Rubio said. "Our girls will get tired of losing in this fashion, and they will decide that they are going to win."
