It was less than perfect for Arizona, but it was enough.
Despite mistakes, the Wildcats beat Davidson 30-21, 30-16, 30-21 Saturday afternoon to finish undefeated in the Four Points Sheraton Arizona Invitational at McKale Center.
"I felt like it was a sign of a young, immature team out there," coach David Rubio said. "Right after our (Friday) match against Irvine, we talked about preparation. We talked about coming in this morning and being prepared to play a precise, sharp match, and it wasn't that way for us — that's disappointing."
The UA (10-2) led by seven or more points for most of the first game. But Arizona rallies were followed with Wildcat mistakes, including six attack errors, four from junior Brooke Buringrud, and three serves out.
"Too many unforced errors on our side that gave the other team their points," said senior Dominique Lamb, who finished with seven kills and four blocks. "If we limit our errors, then we'll find a rhythm."
Arizona allowed the second game to get as close as 11-10. With Davidson looking to tie the game for the first time since starting at 1-1, freshman setter Paige Weber had an ace to start another rally.
Davidson came within five when a Lamb return went out of bounds to make it 20-15. The Wildcats overcame the mistake with a 10-1 run that ended with Davidson's Lindsay Woeste almost hitting the ball into the stands.
Arizona allowed the third game to get as close as 24-20 before going on a 6-1 run.
"It wasn't one of our finest moments. It wasn't our best match. It was kind of quiet. We couldn't find a rhythm," junior Randy Goodenough said. "Every team is going to have their off days, and it's just finding a way to be able to get the win."
Goodenough was named the most valuable player of the tournament. She finished with 15 kills and six blocks in the win over Davidson.
"It's nice to be noticed, but then again, I couldn't do it without my team," she said. "There's no way that you can be an MVP without having the passers that we have, the setters that we have, the defense that we play."
Alanna Resch finished with 19 digs for the Wildcats. She also made the all-tournament team with Davidson's Sarabeth Peele, Cal State-Bakersfield's Jodi Hardin and Cal-Irvine's Lauren Kellerman and Taryn Robertson.
The Wildcats open Pac-10 play Thursday against No. 5 UCLA and Friday against No. 4 USC in Los Angeles.
Dosty update
It's looking more likely that sophomore outside hitter Whitney Dosty could redshirt this season.
"We were in a holding pattern for a couple weeks ...," Rubio said. "Now we're at a point where, if she comes back, great. If not, we've got to move on."
Dosty has not participated in a full practice in the six weeks of the volleyball season.
"There's always that possibility (of redshirting the season)," Rubio said. "And certainly, as we get deeper into the season, that possibility, the percentages go up higher. She's going to get re-evaluated again on Monday."
An announcement could come next week, he said.
"We're hoping we're going to get her back, and we're getting pretty close to the cutoff time," Rubio said. "If she's not practicing within this next week, the chances are pretty likely that she's probably going to redshirt."
