Focused Desert View earns first season win

The showdown with Rio Rico was worth the wait for Desert View.
After waiting more than an hour to take the field because of a lightning delay, host Desert View won 14-0, handing Rio Rico its third consecutive loss.
It was the Jaguars' first win of the season.
"It's nice. A win is a win," Desert View coach Jim Monaco said. "They did a tremendous job with the delay to come out and still be able to still be focused and motivated."
It was a rough start for Desert View after an early fumble by A.J. Willis.
"I just forgot about it and moved on," said Willis, who rushed for 188 yards. "All you can do is move on. No sweat."
And move on he did.
Willis put the Jaguars on the board halfway through the first quarter with a 30-yard TD run.
A kick from Hugo Zepeda made it a 7-0 game.
It was exactly what Monaco expected from his team.
"What we planned on doing we did," he said. "I'm very proud of them. They did a heck of a job."
The Jaguars scored again on a 28-yard pass from David Romero to Marc Jackson.
After entering the half with a sizable lead, Desert View came out in the third with a series of mistakes that prevented the team from scoring again.
David Romero earned the Jaguars a 10-yard penalty for intentional grounding.
"Pick up the pace. Let's go," Monaco yelled from the sidelines after a false start produced a 5-yard penalty.
Willis responded with a 15- yard run for a first down. But it did not produce for the Jaguars.
"Our kids played hard on both sides and they made big plays and we made mistakes," Monaco said. "We're learning as a team together."
Rio Rico attempted to make its first touchdown with 1:17 remaining in the game.
But what could have been a 30-yard touchdown pass from Lucas Meza was intercepted by Jackson in the Rio Rico end zone.
Meza, who was sacked six times, was 4 for 16 for 38 yards as Rio Rico managed just 99 yards in the game.
