Taking a Break: free association

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.07.2007
Brindy Bringhurst
Junior, Marana swimming
On the possible 2008 presidential candidates: "I am strongly, strongly hoping that Hillary Clinton does not win. My family is Republican, and I'm Mormon. We're supporting Mitt Romney, but not because he's LDS. I just think he's a really nice guy with good ideas. My family is rooting for him."
On Apple cutting the price of the iPhone by $200: "It's still too expensive, but I'd love to have one. I'm just a regular teenager, and I want the latest technology. But until I get a job, I depend on my parents."
On Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen working separately: "I think it's about time, because they're older now, so it's not as cute to be together. But I'm not a big fan of them anymore. Once Mary-Kate got messed up and became anorexic, I lost interest. I love all of their older movies, though. My favorite is 'Our Lips are Sealed.'"
— Bringhurst is one of Southern Arizona's top freestyle swimmers. She has won four individual events in two meets this year.
Benjie Brittenham
Junior, St. Gregory soccer
On the most anticipated college football game of the year: USC at Nebraska. "I'm going out to Nebraska for that game, and they're my two favorite teams. I've always been a fan of Nebraska since I was little. My dad went there, and I want to go to USC. They're always a good bet to be a fan of, because they're always No. 1."
On David Beckham's limited playing time in Los Angeles: "I still think he's a great player. But there's a line between how much he's producing and helping the team win and how many viewers he's drawing. I'm not sure why he's here."
On top-selling artists 50 Cent and Kanye West releasing their albums on Sept. 11: "I think Kanye West definitely will sell more. He's an overall better performer. I think he's kind of moved past rap. It's not only rap, it's hip-hop, but 50 Cent is just rap. He's more diverse than 50 Cent. There's only one Kanye, but there's a bunch of 50 Cents."
— Brittenham, a goalkeeper, helped lead St. Gregory to a second-place finish at the Class 1A-3A fall state tournament last year.
Marisa Cornejo
Senior, Salpointe Catholic volleyball
On the most anticipated fall TV premiere: "I'm really, really looking forward to 'Grey's Anatomy.' I'm not sure about the spinoff ('Private Practice'), but I'll probably watch the first few episodes just to see it. … I want to be a surgeon when I grow up, so it's really interesting."
On playing chess, another of her specialties: "There are only two kinds of people that I play against. One, the people who don't want to lose to me because I'm a girl. The others say, 'Oh, this is a girl, so it's going to be easy.' It's always fun to play the ones that don't think girls are anything to worry about. I've been all over the country to play chess."
On the best restaurant in Tucson: Fronimo's Greek Café. "They have the best baklava ever! … My favorite food is seafood, so I like anywhere that has good seafood, too."
— Cornejo, who also plays basketball for Salpointe, led 5A Southern Region setters in assists during the 2006 season.
