Catalina Foothills wins title on mercy rule
Catalina Foothills took the annual Badger Invitational title with a mercy- rule 10-0 win over fifth-seeded Marana at Cherry Field on Saturday.
"We have one more week before region play starts, so this was a good chance to get a lot of kids some at-bats," Catalina Foothills coach Trent Emenecker said.
When Foothills players were at bat, most did not disappoint.
The second-seeded Falcons ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a double from Megan Morrison.
Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the second when Foothills' Bri Swift scored on a single from Aubry Baldwin. It was the first of 10 runs for the Falcons (11-6).
"I think we kind of ran out of gas a little bit," said Marana coach John Stegmaier, whose Tigers are 10-6,
"But I could not be more proud of any group of kids in my life."
The Falcons scored two more in the third with a single from Swift. After a scoreless fourth, Foothills added two more runs in the fifth on three singles.
In the sixth, Colleen Svancara led off with triple, and Gabby Danaher and Stephanie Carramusa added doubles.
"Stephanie Carramusa and Bri Swift are just terrific hitters," Emenecker said.
"They are clutch hitters. They drove in most of our runs."
Foothills pitcher Missy Rambow allowed only two hits.
"It was my first varsity big-championship game that I pitched," Rambow said.
"But my team really backs me up and makes great plays. They are amazing. That's what makes me pitch the best that I can."
Both teams are now looking toward the region championships.
"It's great to win this tournament, but we really want to do well in regions," Emenecker said.
