It was a less-than-perfect effort for the Arizona softball team Sunday against Missouri, but it was enough to give the No. 2 Wildcats an 8-7 victory and a weekend sweep of the unranked Tigers at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Arizona third baseman Jenae Leles ended the game with her third home run of the year, leading off the seventh.
"We'll take it any way we can right now," Wildcats coach Mike Candrea said.
"It feels good to get a win at the end of the day, no matter how we got it," said UA pitcher Taryne Mowatt, who surrendered 11 hits and walked nine in seven innings.
Leles' homer came on the first pitch in the bottom half of the inning.
"I was really proud of Jenae," Candrea said. "She was struggling a little bit early in the game but kept her head screwed on."
"Honestly, I hit the ball and I just ran," Leles said. "I wasn't really trying to worry too much. They were surprised I got the ball out because of the wind."
Surprised but happy.
"I started crying I was so happy," Mowatt said. "She was a little down her last at-bat. But we just told her, you know, 'Stay in there; you're going to come up again.' She did and she hit the home run. It was amazing."
Arizona (14-3) started out with Caitlin Lowe extending her hitting streak to four games with an infield single leading off the first. The center fielder stole second before scoring on Chelsie Mesa's single.
After stealing second, Mesa advanced to third on a grounder by Kristie Fox and scored on Mowatt's sacrifice fly. The lead increased to three when Leles scored on Sam Banister's single.
Lowe scored again in the second on a Fox single.
"Caitlin is an impact player," Candrea said. "She's been an impact player since she's been here."
The Wildcats ended the second with a five-run lead after Fox scored on a Leles double.
"We came out and scored five in the first two," Candrea said. "I'm thinking, 'You know, we have a chance right now to put it away but we tend to make it tough on ourselves.'"
Missouri (14-9) fought back in the fourth, scoring three runs.
Arizona responded by adding two runs with a double from Fox.
Missouri then added three runs in the fifth with a home run from Leanne Bowers.
The Tigers tied the game with one run in the sixth.
