Mowatt perfect as Wildcats sweep doubleheaderArizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 03.01.2007
The UA softball team earned a pair of run-rule exhibition victories over Phoenix College and Pima College on Wednesday. The Wildcats won the opener 9-1, then took the second game 11-0.
The three teams, who won their respective national championships in 2006, played round-robin exhibitions at Hillenbrand Stadium.
In the UA's second game, Taryne Mowatt threw a perfect game and struck out 11 of the 15 Aztecs she faced. Mowatt needed just 70 pitches.
Arizona was held scoreless for the first three innings, then scored all 11 runs in the fourth inning, in which all nine batting positions scored. There were three homers in the frame.
The inning started innocently enough with a Sam Banister single and a K'Lee Arredondo groundout. Former Pima All-American Cyndi Duran then singled to spark 11 straight Wildcat hitters to reach base.
After Caitlin Lowe ripped a two-run double, Chelsie Mesa hit her third homer of the day to give the UA a 4-0 lead. Kristie Fox, Callista Balko, Jenae Leles and Laine Roth used three walks and a single to score a run, leaving the bases loaded for Sam Banister. She hit a grand slam to break open the game.
In its first game, the UA made quick work of Phoenix. The 4 1/2-inning game lasted 1 hour 5 minutes and featured two home runs by Mesa and a grand slam by Roth.
Leles pitched a complete game.
