Wildcats lose on A&M grand slamarizona daily star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 02.25.2007
The fourth-ranked Arizona softball team fell to No. 2 Texas A&M 4-3 on Saturday night for the second time this season.
Both teams were scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Jamie Hinshaw hit a grand slam for the Aggies.
"That inning comes down to a couple walks, an error and one bad pitch," said pitcher Taryne Mowatt. "I went to the same pitch two in a row. It was a good idea, but I just missed my spot."
Arizona tried to catch up for the rest of the game.
It looked like the Wildcats might have rebounded after junior catcher Callista Balko scored late in the fifth inning.
Arizona came even closer when senior Chelsie Mesa hit a two-run home run in the sixth.
"I thought we did a good job coming back," said UA coach Mike Candrea.
"I was proud of the group the way they battled. But you can't spot many people four runs and expect to come back at this level."
The Wildcats hope to play differently when they close the three-game series this afternoon.
"I think it's really important that we pick up our game in the first inning, get them a little more on their toes," Balko said.
Chelsie Mesa extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a fourth-inning single.
The Wildcats beat the Aggies 5-0 on Friday night when Mowatt pitched a one-hitter.
