LAS VEGAS — Will Lowe, Cody Ohl and Trevor Brazile added more hardware to their Gold Buckle collections Thursday night at the National Finals Rodeo.
Lowe, from Canyon, Texas, clinched his second consecutive world bareback title and third in the last four years. Lowe leads the aggregate standings and has $228,285 in world earnings.
Lowe, ahead of runner-up Andy Martinez of Pavillion, Wyo., by about $88,000, credits his friends, and fellow competitors, for his success.
"Those other guys have put me in a rhythm," Lowe said. "Wes (Stevenson) jumped out and won the first round, and things went well after that. Then, Royce (Ford) jumps out and wins him a round, and you just keep rolling and feeding off each other."
Tom McFarland of Wickenburg won the round with an 82.5 on Night Jacket.
In tie-down roping, Ohl, of Hico, Texas, won his sixth world title. Ohl increased his sizable world lead over Brazile, of Decatur, Texas, to just over $86,000 by tying for first with Clint Robinson of Spanish Fork, Utah, with a time of 7.6 in the eighth round.
In all-around, Brazile increased his lead to just over $119,000 over Joe Beaver of Huntsville, Texas, and clinched his fourth world title. Brazile has earned $318,812 and is trying to break bull rider Matt Austin's single-year earnings record of $320,766, set in 2005.
In team roping, Colter Todd of Marana and Cesar de la Cruz of Tucson claimed first place in a time of 4.3. Matt Sherwood of Queen Creek and Walt Woodard of Stockton, Calif., held on to their world lead despite placing 10th. Sherwood has earned $122,017, and Woodard has $125,611.
In bull riding, B.J. Schumacher, of Hillsboro, Wis., increased his world standings lead to over $43,000 by placing second with an 86 on Black Berry Wine.
