Sabino swimmer Tyler Kybartas seems like the typical teen. "I like to hang out with friends anywhere that is fun," said Kybartas, who is also a member of the mock trial team.
But his performance in the pool is anything but average. His stellar performance as a student and swimmer helped him nab a spot on the Scholastic All-American team. "It is a great accomplishment, but I think that I would like to get more points next year," said Kybartas, a junior, who was selected based points accumulated through academic and athletic performances.
Kybartas holds the current Southern Arizona season best in the 100-yard butterfly — his favorite event — with a time of 54.49 seconds. He hopes that time translates into a state championship next month.
Q: Not only do you swim for Sabino, but you also swim with the club team Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics. What are the differences between club and high school swimming?
A: "I think the main difference with high school is you get to race every week and it's a lot more of a team atmosphere. Everyone is really good friends."
Q: Do you want to swim in college?
A: "I would like to get recruited … but I want to stay kind of close to home because I'm really close to my family. They are the most important thing to me. I just couldn't be that far away from them."
Q: Swimming is your talent. But what is one superpower you wish you had?
A: "I would probably want to fly. To go places, instead of getting into a car, you could just fly away."
Q: If you could go to lunch with any person, who would you choose?
A: "My grandpa. He died awhile ago when I was like 10 or something. He meant a lot to me and he still means a lot to me. I haven't seen him in six years."
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: "I used to play ice hockey when I was little. I used to go all over the place, like to Colorado and Texas to play for the team. And I thought I'd play for the rest of my life, but then swimming came along."
