Manning misses first practice in nine yearsThe Associated Press
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.12.2006
INDIANAPOLIS — Two-time MVP Peyton Manning missed the first regular-season practice of his nine-year career Wednesday to attend his grandmother's funeral in Mississippi.
Manning was one of three Colts' Pro Bowl players excused from the workout. The others were defensive end Dwight Freeney and safety Bob Sanders. The latter two were not on the field because they were getting treatment for injuries.
The Colts' six-time Pro Bowl quarterback is known as one of the game's top students and hardest workers. He rarely sits out a practice and doesn't like to take plays off. The only other time in his pro career he was absent from practice was during a brief training camp holdout during his rookie season.
Frances Thomas Williams died Monday at age 86 in Meridian, Miss. She was the grandmother of Peyton and Eli Manning, the Giants' quarterback.
Yes, Owens is mad about mediocre start
IRVING, Texas — Terrell Owens screamed it on the sideline against Philadelphia, in the locker room after a loss, and repeated it again Wednesday: "Why am I here?"
The volatile receiver admits he's frustrated with his role on the Dallas Cowboys, but not simply because he's off to his worst start in years. According to T.O., he'd be fine if Dallas was winning and he had mediocre statistics. It's the Cowboys' being 2-2, combined with the reduced numbers, that he can't tolerate.
"I do have a problem when I don't feel like I'm involved enough," he said. "I know I can make a difference. That's not me being arrogant. I just know what I bring to the table. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here. ... I want to win. I came here to help this team win."
Panthers' Morgan is out for season
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Panthers linebacker Dan Morgan will miss the rest of the season while struggling to recover from at least the fifth concussion of his career.
"He did meet with the medical people and they felt it was in his best interest not to play the remainder of the season," coach John Fox said Wednesday.
