Tucsonan Bruce Gungle finished 24th in the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon in California on Wednesday.
Gungle, a 47-year-old who started running at 10 a.m. Monday, traversed the course through Death Valley in 41 hours 26 minutes 23 seconds. He finished 26th in the event in 2004.
Gungle "did phenomenal," two-time Badwater winner Pam Reed said in a phone interview.
Reed, of Tucson, dropped out after 40 miles because of dehydration.
"It was complete torture the whole time … and it's never happened to me before," Reed said. "I got dehydrated really early — at 9 miles. I got iced down. At 35 miles, I was going so slow. I was basically dehydrated. I lost four pounds. Then on the second part, I lost 1 1/2 pounds."
Scott Jurek of Seattle was the winner in 25:41:18.
