DA: Investigation will continue
DURHAM, N.C. — Standing before a mostly black audience, the district attorney in charge of the Duke University rape investigation said Tuesday he does not need DNA to bring charges and vowed, "This case is not going away."
District Attorney Mike Nifong spoke one day after defense attorneys said DNA testing failed to connect any of Duke's lacrosse players to the alleged attack on a black stripper, who said she was raped at a party by members of the nearly all-white 47-man team.
Nifong stopped short of confirming the defense assessment of the DNA results, but said the case would not be hampered by a lack of DNA evidence.
The district attorney faces two challengers in a May 2 primary election. Asked by a member of the audience about the campaign, he said: "As the district attorney, you do not get to choose what crimes occur and when they occur. This is not about an election. This is about justice."

Capel replaces Sampson at Okla.
NORMAN, Okla. — Jeff Capel, a 31-year-old former Duke guard, was hired as Oklahoma's basketball coach Tuesday.
Capel resigned at Virginia Commonwealth to replace Kelvin Sampson and take over a program under NCAA investigation.
"I know that this announcement in the college basketball world is shocking," Capel said after being introduced by athletic director Joe Castiglione. "But I know, and I have all the confidence, that it is the right decision. I know it's the right decision for me."
Capel was 79-41 in four seasons as coach at VCU, his first head coaching position.

CARY, North Carolina — Ben Olsen scored the equalizer in the 25th minute off a record-setting assist from Landon Donovan and the United States salvaged a 1-1 draw against Jamaica on Tuesday night, the final game before U.S. manager Bruce Arena chooses his 23-man World Cup roster.
It was Donovan's 23rd career assist, moving him ahead of Cobi Jones for the most in U.S. national team history, as the Americans extended their unbeaten record against Jamaica to 17 games.
Tony Meola played in his 100th game, the ninth U.S. player to reach the plateau. He was the starting goalkeeper at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, and the No. 3 goalkeeper four years ago.
