Wildcats run afoul after 1st-half foulsArizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.05.2009
PALO ALTO, Calif. — Arizona once again found out the importance of its key players in the first half of Sunday's game.
With 2:27 left in the first half, Jordan Hill picked up his second foul and sat out the rest of the half along with fellow foul-plagued starters Jamelle Horne and Nic Wise.
Wise sat the final four minutes after he collected two fouls and Horne sat out five after he picked up his third and was replaced by Brendon Lavender.
By the time Hill picked up his second foul, having collected 13 points and seven rebounds, UA interim head coach Russ Pennell went with a lineup of Zane Johnson, Chase Budinger, Fendi Onobun, Garland Judkins and Kyle Fogg for most of the last two minutes. Alex Jacobson also substituted for Onobun in the final seconds.
The Wildcats were outscored 8-1 with that group on the floor.
Wise had only four points and one assist, with two turnovers, in the first half but off-guard Fogg chipped in five points and an assist over 19 minutes.
Quick transition
Without twins Brook and Robin Lopez around this season, it was a good idea for Stanford to run a bit faster this season no matter who the coach was.
Fortunately for the Cardinal, assistant coach Rodney Tention said, the team picked up the style under new head coach Johnny Dawkins. The Cardinal was 10-0 in nonconference play before losing 90-60 to ASU on Friday.
"I didn't think it was too tough," said Tention, a former UA assistant under Lute Olson. "I think especially with our personnel, we didn't have the big guys and we didn't have those big guys who can go down there and mix it up. So I think the kids have liked the fact that they can get up the floor and run and have some freedom.
"We're still learning. But we're having fun. The kids are having fun. Sometimes you've got to tell guys to go hard. We've really never had to do that. They just do that naturally."
Usual lineup
Arizona started Sunday's game with what has become its most common starting lineup: Hill, Horne, Budinger, Fogg and Wise.
The lineup has started six of the Wildcats' 13 games and had a 2-4 record after Sunday's game.
Full house
Arizona was able to escape most of the Cal students on Friday because of winter break, but Stanford students return to class on Tuesday.
As a result, the rowdy Stanford Sixth Man section was full.
Efficient start
Arizona began Sunday's game by hitting 5 of 8 field goals in the first 6:16, including six points inside from Hill, a dunk from Budinger and a jumper from Horne.
Stanford hit only 3 of 11 field goals over the same time period.
Oops
Stanford's introduction of Arizona's coaching staff included the mention of Russ Penn-AL (normally pronounced PEN-ul) as head coach and Mike Brase (actually Matt) as an assistant.
