SAN DIEGO — James Harden scored 18 points and helped No. 15 Arizona State take control late in a 59-52 victory over scrappy San Diego State on Tuesday night.
After trailing most of the game, the Sun Devils (2-0) made three straight three-pointers to go ahead for good. Rihards Kuksiks' long shot tied it at 44 with 6:04 left before Harden hit a three to give ASU its second lead, 47-44. Kuksiks hit another shot from behind the arc for a 50-44 lead.
ASU outscored San Diego State 18-8 over the last 6:27, including five free throws down the stretch by Derek Glasser.
Kyle Spain scored 17 points for the Aztecs (1-1), who shot just 35.3 percent from the field.
● No. 1 North Carolina 77, Kentucky 58: In Chapel Hill, N.C., Deon Thompson scored a career-high 20 points to help top-ranked North Carolina win despite playing without national Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough.
Freshman 7-footer Tyler Zeller, who started both games in place of injured Hansbrough, took a hard foul on a dunk attempt in transition, fell to the ground under the basket and got up holding his left wrist before heading to the locker room with 1:26 left. Coach Roy Williams said Zeller was taken to a hospital for X-rays.
Hansbrough, who has missed almost three weeks of practice with a shin injury, sat out Saturday's opening victory against Pennsylvania, the first game the senior had missed in his career.
● No. 7 Texas 76, Tulane 51: In Austin, Texas, Damion James scored 16 points, and Texas cruised.
Dexter Pittman, a 6-foot-10-inch, 300-pound junior forward, had 10 points and six rebounds in his second career start for the Longhorns (2-0), who had five players score in double figures. A.J. Abrams, who had 21 points in the season-opener, had 15 against Tulane, hitting three three-pointers.
Texas used a stellar defensive effort to turn the game into a rout by halftime. The Longhorns had 16 steals and forced 25 turnovers while holding Tulane to 31 percent shooting.
● No. 9 Gonzaga 80, Idaho 46: In Spokane, Wash., Micah Downs scored 18 points, and Austin Daye added 16 as Gonzaga beat the Vandals for the ninth consecutive time.
Josh Heytvelt added 15 points for the Bulldogs (2-0), who scored the first 17 points of the game.
Mac Hopson led Idaho (1-2) with 19 points, and Kashif Watson added 12. The Vandals shot 29.8 percent in the game, committed 20 turnovers and were out-rebounded 47-27.
● No. 11 Purdue 78, Loyola of Chicago 46: In West Lafayette, Ind., E'Twaun Moore scored 14 points, and Purdue advanced to the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals.
Robbie Hummel scored 13 points, and Marcus Green had 12 points and matched his career-high with 10 rebounds for the Boilermakers (3-0), who will play Boston College in New York on Nov. 26.
● No. 12 Oklahoma 82, No. 21 Davidson 78: In Norman, Okla., Blake Griffin scored 25 points and pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds, and freshman Willie Warren added 20 points for Oklahoma.
Davidson's Stephen Curry scored a career-high 44 points on 12-for-29 shooting and went 6-for-15 from three-point range.
Curry tried to will his team back from a 21-point deficit in the second half and got the Wildcats (2-1) within three points with a three-pointer in the final minute.
● No. 14 Tennessee 91, Tenn.-Martin 64: In Knoxville, Tenn., reserve forward Brian Williams scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Tennessee in its 34th consecutive home victory, breaking the school record set from 1966 to 1968.
Tyler Smith scored seven of his 19 points in the first 2 1/2minutes for the Volunteers (2-0), who opened the game on a 27-6 run.
● No. 19 USC 73, New Mexico St. 60: In Los Angeles, Taj Gibson tied his career high with 22 points and had a career-best 10 rebounds as Southern California got off to its first 2-0 start in eight years.
DeMar DeRozan, USC's highly touted freshman making his second start, finished with seven points after scoring 14 in his college debut.
● No. 24 Kansas 85, Florida Gulf Coast 45: In Lawrence, Kan., Sherron Collins had a career-high 25 points for Kansas, which raised its 2008 national championship banner.
The Jayhawks (2-0) celebrated last season's national title during a pre-game ceremony that unveiled the school's fifth national championship banner among the other four at the north end of Allen Fieldhouse.
● No. 25 Wisconsin 88, SIU-Edwardsville 58: In Madison, Wis., reserve Jon Leuer scored 19 points to lead Wisconsin.
Marcus Landry added 15 points for the Badgers (2-0), Jason Bohannon had 14, and Trevon Hughes added 11, even though the starters spent most of the second half on the bench.
