Kevin O'Neill insists he does not have doghouses. But if he did, Fendi Onobun would probably be huddled up in the back corner.
O'Neill, the UA interim head coach, kicked Onobun out of a hard-driving practice Tuesday, having already dismissed Onobun on several occasions for tardiness earlier this season. O'Neill said Onobun was not late this time, but O'Neill would not say why he asked Onobun to leave.
In any case, O'Neill said Tuesday's dismissal would not be an issue going forward.
"He'll be here" today, O'Neill said.
Onobun, a junior forward, has played in 12 of UA's 22 games, averaging 7.3 minutes a game with averages of 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds. He had four fouls in four minutes during the first half Saturday at UCLA and did not play after halftime.
Brielmaier out
O'Neill said forward Bret Brielmaier will not play all this week after re-aggravating his sprained shoulder at UCLA on Saturday.
O'Neill said the injury, originally suffered Dec. 22, did not get any worse, but it has already limited Brielmaier to sporadic play.
"It's the same," O'Neill said. "The problem is it's probably not gonna get better."
O'Neill also rested regulars Jawann McClellan and Nic Wise, who are both battling fatigue and minor injuries, saying he wanted to see Zane Johnson work with the first team instead of Wise, anyway.
One-man band
With assistant Josh Pastner out recruiting and assistant Miles Simon attending a funeral for his grandmother, O'Neill ran practice alone Tuesday.
O'Neill said Simon's grandmother, who had battled lung cancer, died Jan. 29. But he said he was unsure if or when Simon would return.
"I don't know," O'Neill said. "I haven't talked to him."
Simon was unavailable for comment via his cell phone.
More time
After taking Sunday and Monday off, the Wildcats resumed practice Tuesday, and O'Neill said they would also have a full practice Thursday.
Because of injuries and fatigue, O'Neill has reduced the Wildcats' schedule to effectively only one hard practice a week, usually on Tuesday.
But because Arizona does not play until Sunday against ASU, they have more time in their schedule for rest and practice.
Earlier Tuesday, during the weekly Pac-10 teleconference call, O'Neill said he has let up on practices to keep Jerryd Bayless, Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill fresh.
But he said he is not worried about the heavy minutes all of them are playing as the Wildcats enter the second half of Pac-10 play.
"I don't buy into that," O'Neill said. "I would more in the NBA. But these guys are 18 and 19 years old. We get a timeout every four minutes. I'd rather play our guys less minutes, but in my mind, out of a necessity, these are the minutes they have to play. We taper our practices to that, too. We only practice once a week, which I hate doing, but it's something we have to do."
ASU coach Herb Sendek said Tuesday it was a good opportunity to have the extra practice and rest time but declined to say how the Sun Devils will use it.
"We're taking it one day at a time," Sendek said.
