Professional football takes the spotlight this weekend with Super Bowl XLII in Glendale. But college rugby football fans are turning their attention to Tucson for the first Super Rugby weekend.
"It's a takeoff of Super Bowl Sunday because the Super Bowl is in Arizona this year," UA coach Dave Sitton said.
Super weekend is the first action for the team since defeating Idaho State 55-0 last month in Las Vegas. Arizona opens SoCal Conference play today against UC-Santa Barbara at 6 p.m. The varsity also will play Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Cal Poly-SLO.
"We're playing two teams we haven't beaten in over five years," Sitton said. "They are going to be very competitive games. We were on top of them in early conference history, and our senior class thinks this is the time to beat them."
Games are played at the Rincon Vista Pitch, near the corner of South Tucson Boulevard and East 15th Street. The Star talked to Sitton about three reasons to catch the Super Rugby weekend:
1. It is free. Attending this weekend's Super Bowl XLII can cost you thousands of dollars, but rugby is a little easier on your wallet. "The best part is there is no admission," Sitton said.
2.The players are world-class. Three national team members will play for the Wildcats this weekend. After the season, the team will play in Australia and New Zealand.
3. Rugby is beautiful. "There's so much mystery in America surrounding rugby," Sitton said. "Between our two opponents and our program, people have the opportunity to see the best in college rugby this weekend in Tucson. … It really is a beautiful football game."
