Larry Smith's professional timeline

• 1967: Gets first college coaching job — as defensive ends coach — at Miami (Ohio)
• 1969: Follows boss Bo Schembechler to Michigan as the offensive line coach.
• 1973: Leaves that post to become Jim Young's associate head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the UA.
• 1976: Hired as the head coach at Tulane University. He led the Green Wave to the 1979 Liberty Bowl, losing 9-6 to Joe Paterno's Penn State team.
• 1980: Takes over at the UA on April 16 after Tony Mason resigns amid scandal. "I know the past few weeks around here have been traumatic," he said. "I would hope that over the days and weeks, that we would put this behind us, starting today."
• 1982: Angered that Arizona State arrived for the rivalry game in the wrong-colored jerseys — forcing the UA to change and delay kickoff — Smith inspires the Wildcats to a 28-18 victory on Nov. 27 to crush the Sun Devils' Rose Bowl hopes.
• 1985: Ties Georgia at 13 in the Dec. 28 Sun Bowl, the UA's first postseason appearance since 1979.
• 1986: Defeats North Carolina 30-21 in the Dec. 27 Aloha Bowl, his last game as UA coach.
• 1987: Smith decides to take the USC job on Jan. 1. He tells reporters at a Jan. 3 news conference in Los Angeles that, "Had I had a five-year contract (from the UA), I would not be here." Smith brings eight of nine assistants with him.
• 1992: Is fired after six years and three Pac-10 titles at USC. Resurfaces at Missouri for the 1994 season.
• 1997: Takes Missouri to the 1997 Holiday Bowl, finishing with the school's first winning record since • • 1983: At the time, he became the fourth coach in college football history to take four different schools to bowl games. Earle Bruce, Lou Holtz and Bill Mallory were the others.
• 2000: Is diagnosed with chronic lymphatic leukemia during a routine checkup at Missouri. "My first reaction was, 'Jesus, is this thing gonna kill me?' " he later told the Star. For the first four years of having the disease, he had regular checkups but took no medication.
• 2000: Fired Nov. 19 by Missouri after going 7-15 his final two seasons.
• 2003: Smith, living back in Tucson, begins calling UA football games for FSN Arizona
• 2005: On Sept. 15, broadcasts the UA-Northern Arizona game with partner Dave Sitton, both of whom battled cancer in the off-season. Smith's chronic lymphatic leukemia was in remission. He had begun chemotherapy the preceding December, and was in good health by June.
