UA Sports

Inside the game

Rivalry?
• C'mon, New Mexico — we need to see a little effort here.
Saturday night, there was no sign of the Lobo cheerleaders or Lobo band. Neither Louie nor Lucy Lobo, the school's equivalent of Wilbur and Wilma, were anywhere to be seen.
The absence might reflect the financial inequity between the Pac-10 and Mountain West conferences. New Mexico's budget from July 2005-2006 was $25,997,808, according to the Office of Postsecondary Education. Arizona spent $38,444,312 during that same span — about $13 million more. But really, how much does it cost to put a mascot on a plane?
Weird
• It is the campiest thing we have seen at Arizona Stadium.
The Wildcat marching band's halftime salute to the UA's Phoenix Mars Mission was a sight to behold. Most of the band formed two concentric circles in the middle of the field and played the theme to "2001: A Space Odyssey."
At the bottom of the circle, about 20 drum line members wore lime green alien masks; the cymbal players lit their cymbals on fire. Tuba players and baton twirlers — whose sticks were on fire — "landed" on "Mars" after walking from the south end zone. After the performance, band members scrambled to pick up gold and silver glitter at the 30-yard line. Kickoff was delayed by two minutes when UA workers tried to sweep up the glitter with push brooms and dust pans.
Commercial
• When referee Jay Stricherz announced that New Mexico's first-quarter touchdown would stand, Fox Sports Net Arizona was showing a Borderlands Outlet Store commercial.
Under a new rule, television stations are now allowed to take a media timeout while officials look at instant replay. Before, the network had to stay with live action. But Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen sent a memo to conference schools Wednesday OK'ing commercial breaks during reviews. By getting ads in then, stations don't have to take a break later in the game, conceivably speeding it up.
Wetworks
• The rain came to Arizona Stadium at 6:25 p.m., and stayed steady until about three minutes after kickoff.
The previous time the UA played a home game in any kind of rain, it did not end well. On Sept. 18, 2004, Nick Folk missed a field goal attempt with 43 seconds left, and the UA lost to No. 20 Wisconsin 9-7.
That game featured an 88-minute lightning delay just before halftime, the wrath of Tropical Storm Javier.
By the numbers
467
Number of rushes without a lost fumble by UA running backs until Chris Jennings coughed up the ball at the New Mexico 22-yard line with about 10 minutes left.
3
The number of times, in three chances, the UA has won the coin flip this season. The Wildcats have deferred to the second half every time.
