sitton one out
• Dave Sitton worked Saturday, but from just outside Pauley Pavilion. The Wildcats' television broadcaster coached the UA club rugby team Saturday at the Pac-10 tournament. The tournament was held at the UCLA intramural fields about 10 steps north of the arena entrance. Steve Physioc and Marques Johnson called Saturday's game for FSN. Sitton is the head coach of the rugby team.
Warm greeting
• Before every game, the UCLA student section gives a shout-out to every player on the home team. Dressed in baby blue T-shirts, "The Den" chants the name of every UCLA player — and mix in the traditional college "clap-clap, clap-clap-clap" — until they acknowledge the crowd. The scoreboard operator plays along, showing live video of the player on the screen until he waves to the students.
WEIRD
• Dressed in an all-blue suit with a yellow golfer's cap, a UCLA student juggled yellow balls in front of the band. Chris Smith, the UCLA band's juggler — yes, that is official — began his stint in 2004. Saturday, he juggled balls and pins and did that bit where he uses two sticks to balance a third one. He is from Denmark and is a filmmaker, according to his Web site, and is available for parties. During a first-half timeout, he performed to the band playing Green Day's "American Idiot." The joke's just too easy.
GAme of Runs
• Arizona and UCLA combined for 64 points in the first 20 minutes of the game, the Bruins leading 35-29. But the start of the second half had a far more Arizona-like pace — the teams combined to score 24 points in the first five minutes. It did not matter — the UA still trailed by six.
welcome back
• UCLA welcomed back Mike Warren, who played from 1966 to 1968, to Pauley Pavilion. After leaving Westwood, Warren had a successful acting career, most notably as Officer Bobby Hill, below, on "Hill Street Blues" from 1981 to 1987. Warren's son, Cash, is a producer and has dated starlet Jessica Alba.
So Hollywood
• When Nic Wise walked to the free-throw line in the first half, The Den started chanting "oompa-loompa," a reference to Willy Wonka's tiny chocolate factory workers. It was the most creative thing said by the student section all afternoon. The Den spent most of the day doing the same bland "U-C-L-A" chant in what is maybe the least threatening gym in the conference.
Whoosh
• The UA could not get out of Pauley Pavilion fast enough. Immediately after their loss at UCLA, the Wildcats raced to the team bus. The game ended a little after 3 p.m., and the UA did very limited formal interviews afterward because they had to catch a 5:38 flight to Tucson. The team left the arena between 3:45 and 4 for LAX, about 15 minutes — without traffic — from Westwood.
