The case before Pima County Superior Court Judge Ben C. Birdsall on May 9, 1973, involved whether the city of Tucson and the Easter Seal Society could continue to transport the handicapped. Among those who showed up to testify and hear arguments in the case were these Tucsonans, who relied on such service. The owner of Handi-Car had sued because a recent contract between the city and Easter Seals to provide service infringed on his exclusive charter and created unlawful competition. The judge eventually ruled against the city. Read about Tucson's connection to the origins of the Easter Seal Society at go.azstarnet.com/morguetales.
