Want to get your foot in the door with one of Southern Arizona's largest employers? For college students, an internship might be the way to go.
Interns at these companies find out what the work is really like, meet managers and gain experience. BusinessWeek magazine has recommended these companies' programs, which have local opportunities.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car
• Number of local interns: 10
• What's good: "It is a paid internship, and it basically teaches you how to run a business," said Stacey Kretzmann, group recruiting manager in Tucson. "As long as they do a good job and enjoy their internship, they're asked to stay on as a full-time manager when they graduate, so there definitely is a career path."
• Who's eligible: College juniors and seniors with business-related majors

IBM
• Number of local interns: 25
• What's good: "IBM's diverse portfolio of internship offerings (enables) interns to target individual interests, achieve career goals and much more," spokeswoman Jennifer Trueba Spears said in an e-mail. "These summer opportunities have become great tools for students and employers to find the perfect fit. Our interns work on challenging assignments; get freedom to innovate, network and learn; test-drive IBM as a company to work for; and have fun."

Kohl's
• Number of local interns: varies
• What's good: "The Kohl's Store Management Internship Program is an intense 10-week program that allows participants to demonstrate their management potential," Nzingha Thompson, a Kohl's spokeswoman, said in an e-mail. "The internship provides hands-on experience. In fact, interns are given the opportunity to be the manager on duty and manage various areas of the store. At the end of the program, some interns may be offered full-time positions."

Marriott
• Number of local interns: three
• What's good: "We are very involved in internships," said Susan Miller, human resources director at JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and Spa. "In fact, we had begun an internship program in our third year, this past year, and we'll continue growing that. We took interns from the Northern Arizona University program at Pima (Community College). We did have three interns, and there are two of them who still work for Marriott."
