With younger team, US quickly back at work

TUKWILA, Wash. — Bob Bradley was walking off the practice field toward the team bus when a father stopped the coach of the United States national team with a cheerful yell from a playground.
"Hey, good job on the Confederations Cup, man!" the dad shouted through a chain-link fence as a little girl played nearby. He then raised his coffee cup to salute the coach.
Two weeks ago, the guy might have thrown his mug at Bradley — if he'd even known who he was.
Now, strangers are toasting the U.S. coach and his team.
Just days after its stunning success in the Confederations Cup in South Africa, a younger, scaled-down U.S. team will play today against Grenada in its opener of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
In the Confederations Cup final Sunday, the United States led five-time World Cup champion Brazil by two goals at halftime before losing 3-2.
"People are excited," Bradley said Wednesday, looking anything but after a trek halfway across the globe in the previous two days. "We all feel good that you get to a big tournament and your performance gets soccer people up and going. And now it gives us momentum to keep it going."
The Americans will be trying to win a third consecutive Gold Cup, the championship of the region.
"Yeah, traveling halfway across the world definitely has an effect," said forward Charlie Davies. "It's just a matter of getting refocused. … It feels really good to be back in the U.S."
Corner kicks
• Forward Jozy Altidore, goalkeeper Brad Guzan and midfielder Ricardo Clark were among seven players added to the U.S. roster for the Gold Cup.
Forward Conor Casey, midfielders Benny Feilhaber and Sacha Kljestan, and defender Jonathan Bornstein also were put on the roster Thursday.
• Former Germany midfielder Jermaine Jones could switch to the United States later this year. The 27-year-old Jones, who has appeared in the European Champions League for Schalke, has played three times for Germany in friendlies. He holds dual citizenship and has petitioned FIFA for a switch of nationality.
• Osael Romero scored two goals, including the winner in the 86th minute, to give El Salvador a 2-1 victory over Costa Rica in Group A of the Gold Cup on Friday night in Carson, Calif.
• Ali Gerba scored in the 75th minute to give Canada a 1-0 victory over Jamaica on Friday in the other Group A Gold Cup game in Carson, Calif.
• David Beckham has become a bad teammate on the Los Angeles Galaxy, according to Landon Donovan.
"All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us," Donovan was quoted as saying in an excerpt of Grant Wahl's "The Beckham Experiment," scheduled for publication July 14. "As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways — on the field, off the field."
• Michael Owen joined English champion Manchester United on a two-year contract Friday, a striking reversal of fortunes for an injury-plagued striker who had been consigned to the England scrapheap by Fabio Capello.
