Pima College board approves hiring of Nugent as football coach

staff and wire reports
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.15.2009
The Pima College board of governors has approved the hiring of former Canyon del Oro High School football coach Pat Nugent as the junior college's next football coach.
"I know they haven't had a lot of success lately, but I've been in that situation before when I took over the CDO program and that was 0-10," Nugent said. "As a high school coach, I always felt Pima was a good situation to be in. Hopefully, it turns out that way."
Chancellor Roy Flores had recommended Nugent for the job during the board's meeting Wednesday night at the school's district office.
"I've been very impressed with his game knowledge and game management, especially the way he relates to the kids," said Robert Riza, assistant vice chancellor for student services. "He's an outstanding individual and a great person. The highest compliment I could give is that I would let my son play for him."
Nugent was 72-29 in eight years at CDO and guided the Dorados to five conference titles and six playoff appearances. CDO was a Class 4A-I state runner-up in 2007 and state semifinalist in 2008.
He has also coached at Flowing Wells and Rincon/University.
As Pima's only full-time coach, Nugent will receive a salary starting at $40,040.
Previous coach Bill Laslett resigned on Nov. 17 after his teams went 1-30 in three seasons.
