Sharapova pulls out of Australian Openthe associated press
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.12.2009
SYDNEY, Australia — Maria Sharapova's shoulder injury will keep her out of another big event — the Australian Open.
Sharapova told the tournament Sunday she will not be able to defend her title at Melbourne Park beginning next Monday. She also missed the Beijing Olympics and the U.S. Open because of the injury, and her recovery has been slower than expected.
"My shoulder is doing great," she said in a statement. "But I just started training a few weeks ago and I am just not near the level I need to be to compete at the highest levels."
Her Australian Open win last year started an 18-match winning streak, enabling her to briefly reclaim her No. 1 ranking in May. But her ailing shoulder hampered her progress in the second half of the season.
● In Sydney, Serena Williams overcame a glaring mistake by the chair umpire to win her first match of the season, a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-5 victory over Australian Samantha Stosur on Sunday at the Sydney International.
Last year's U.S. Open champion was serving for the match at 6-5 and 30-30 in the second set when the umpire failed to notice an obvious let call as Williams' serve hit the net. Williams didn't even bother to chase down Stosur's return, believing it to be a certain let.
Stosur was awarded the point and went on to break Williams and won the ensuing tiebreaker. Williams fought off four match points in the 10th game of the third set before breaking Stosur two games later to win the match.
"I felt like I was going to win that second set," she said after the match. "And then I hit a massive net cord and the guy didn't call it. Even Sam knew it was a net cord. It was frustrating at that point. These types of things seem to happen to me a lot."
● In Chennai, India, third-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia won his second ATP Tour title, defeating wild card Somdev Devvarman of India 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the final of the Chennai Open on Sunday.
● In Brisbane, Australia, Radek Stepanek came from a set down for a third straight match to beat Fernando Verdasco 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 Sunday for the Brisbane International title.
● In Hobart, Australia, Patty Schnyder was knocked out of the Hobart International in the first round Sunday by Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 6-4.

Armstrong arrives early
ADELAIDE, Australia — Lance Armstrong arrived in Australia on Sunday a few hours after his Astana team, and a few days ahead of when Tour Down Under officials expected him.
The team flew in from Europe via Singapore in preparation for the UCI ProTour race, which starts Sunday and marks the seven-time Tour de France winner's return to professional competition four years after he retired.
"I believe my form is as good as it ever was for this early in January," Armstrong said. "My fitness is probably ahead of where it would have been other years, but I've been training a lot earlier than the previous years as well."
● In Rome, David Beckham made a surprising start in his AC Milan debut Sunday, playing 89 minutes in a solid if not outstanding performance in a 2-2 draw against AS Roma.
"I felt good in the game, very strong and I enjoyed it," said Beckham, who joined Milan on a two-month loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy. "I enjoyed playing with these players and in this city."
● In Reno, Nev., Patrick Allen won the Lumber Liquidators PBA National Bowling Stadium Championship on Sunday, beating Walter Ray Williams Jr. 225-223 when Williams left a pocket 8-10 split on his second shot in the 10th frame.
