One competitor uses an interesting tactic to beat Star's expertArizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.02.2009
Two weeks ago, I dared readers to out-pick me in the Star's annual Holiday Bowl Challenge.
I'm still waiting.
In an upset that ranks just this side of Appalachian State beating Michigan, I have picked 21 of the first 27 bowl games correctly.
Using the Star's scoring system — one point for non-Bowl Championship Series games, two points for BCS games and five for the national championship — I have 22 points.
Cincinnati's loss in the Orange Bowl kept me from a perfect 5 for 5 in New Year's Day bowl games.
Still, it appears that David Fitzsimmons' 2009 calendars, the prizes for beating me, are safe.
Just one of the 50 or so entrants — Ray Moucha of Green Valley — is picking games at a similar clip, and his success comes with an asterisk.
Moucha has purposely matched all my picks with the exception of tonight's Sugar Bowl between Utah and Alabama, making it a one-game contest.
"I really want a calendar, so I am cheating a little by agreeing with Ryan on all his picks except for the dumbest one," Moucha wrote in an email.
His strategy is working. But so is mine.
Here are my picks for the remaining games:
Cotton Bowl (12:15 p.m. today): Texas Tech over Ole Miss
Liberty Bowl (3 p.m. today): East Carolina over Kentucky
Sugar Bowl (6 tonight): Utah over Alabama
International Bowl (10a.m. Saturday): Buffalo over Connecticut
Fiesta Bowl (6 p.m. Monday): Texas over Ohio State
GMAC Bowl (6 p.m. Tuesday): Tulsa over Ball State
Bowl Championship Series national championship game (6 p.m. Thursday): Oklahoma over Florida
