SEATTLE — Fresno State coach Pat Hill has withdrawn from consideration for the head coaching job at Washington.
Hill said in a statement released Thursday by Fresno State that he had interviewed with UW officials Saturday in Seattle, a day after the Bulldogs lost their regular-season finale at Boise State.
Hill, a former UA assistant under Dick Tomey, wanted a decision from the Huskies before he led his team back to practice to prepare for their ninth bowl in 10 seasons.
But he said Washington officials told him they weren't yet ready to announce their replacement for fired coach Tyrone Willingham.
"I had a great visit with the leadership at the University of Washington and I have a great deal of respect for them and their vision," Hill said. "Because of the time frame we discussed, which is that I needed an answer by Wednesday, it's apparent that I'm not their top candidate.
"I felt it was in my best interest and the best interest of our team to make this decision at this time."
Tuberville leaving 'shocked' Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville's job was not in jeopardy when he decided to step down, and he declined several requests from his bosses to reconsider, athletic director Jay Jacobs said Thursday.
Jacobs said Tuberville's departure after 10 mostly successful seasons was "completely his decision" and that the coach would be leading the Tigers next season if he had not chosen to leave.
"To say the least, I was a little shocked," the AD said. "But after three times of asking him would he change his mind, he convinced me that the best thing for him and his family, and for this football program, was for him to possibly take a year off and take a step back."
Beckman hired as coach at Toledo
TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo hired Tim Beckman as head coach Thursday, selecting the Oklahoma State defensive coordinator to take over its football program.
Beckman, a native of Ohio, has spent the past two seasons at Oklahoma State, where his 14th-ranked Cowboys gave up 27 points per game this season in the Big 12.
