Minutes after they secured a 54-47 victory over UC-Santa Barbara, the Arizona Wildcats received scouting reports for their next opponent, eighth-ranked Texas A&M.
Since their win Sunday afternoon, the Cats (3-1) will have had 50 hours and one practice to prepare for the Aggies (3-0), who reached the Elite Eight last season.
"Oh, it's not going to be difficult at all," UA coach Niya Butts said. "It is what it is. That's what I tell them all the time. We're not complaining about anything. We're not making excuses.
"That's our schedule, and we have to play it. Naturally, it's not ideal, but it is what it is."
Sophomore forward Ify Ibekwe and freshman guard Reiko Thomas had yet to study Texas A&M's personnel and plays after they beat UCSB in the Wildcats' home opener.
"They probably think they're just going to smash us, but if we do what we have to do on offense and defense, then it will be a really good game," said Ibekwe, who collected a career-high 19 rebounds and 15 points Sunday.
Here are four key elements to today's Arizona-Texas A&M matchup:
1 A scout from the WNBA's Seattle Storm has requested a pass to attend the game, presumably to watch Texas A&M's Wade Trophy Award candidate Takia Starks, a shooting guard who averaged 16.3 points last season, and All-Big 12 selection Danielle Gant, a 5-foot-10-inch guard/forward who averaged 14.7 points and 7.1 rebounds a year ago.
"A big part of (Monday's) practice is going over what they do and trying to stop their guards, because their guards are extremely fast and physical," Thomas said. "We just have to match their intensity on both sides of the ball.
"I know (Starks is) extremely fast, really athletic and she's the heart and soul of their team."
2Arizona leads the all-time series 2-1 but lost the last meeting 64-44 in November 2006 in College Station, Texas. Senior forward Amina Njonkou, the only UA player remaining from that contest, finished with seven points and six rebounds. Arizona's victories were in 1997 in Tucson and 1996 in College Station.
3Texas A&M has emerged as a national power, winning more than 20 games in each of the last three seasons under coach Gary Blair, the 2007 Big 12 Coach of the Year.
"They're a well-coached team," Butts said. "They've got some tremendous athletes and they'll be ready to play. The one thing we have to do, if we execute our game plan, we'll give ourselves a chance."
4Earlier this month, the Aggies beat Arizona on the recruiting trail. Adrienne Pratcher, a senior at East High School in Memphis, Tenn., chose Texas A&M over Kentucky, where Butts was an assistant for five seasons, and Arizona, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Pratcher, who is considered one of the nation's top recruits at point guard, signed a letter of intent with the Aggies two weeks ago.
